Whatever a community association’s situation, it’s important for homeowners and board members to realize the importance of a comprehensive security program. The old notion that “the better the neighborhood, the less the security concern’ is no longer appropriate. Every community needs to make security and safety a top priority.

ORLANDO - Police in Orlando say a 50-year-old man taking a firearms certification course was shot in the foot after the instructor's gun discharged.

The incident happened Saturday morning at a certification class for carrying concealed firearms.

The student, Robert Frauman Jr., was taken to Florida Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

No further details were provided by authorities.

A classic sailing schooner has departed from the Florida Keys bound for earthquake-ravaged Haiti with more than 10 tons of relief supplies.

The 74-foot(22.5-meter)-long boat's cargo of food, water, medicine, tools and other supplies, donated by Keys residents and businesses, began the 650-mile (1,050-kilometer) voyage Saturday with seven crew members to a remote Haitian coastal village.

Although the village suffered minimal damage from the Jan. 12 earthquake, it has become overcrowded with Haitians who fled Port-au-Prince. It is situated in a region inaccessible to large relief ships.

A guard for an armored car company was shot today during a robbery outside a grocery store in southeast Houston, police said.

At least two gunmen struck shortly after 11:30 a.m. when the Triple D Security armored car pulled up to a Kroger store in the 6300 block of Telephone.

Customer Keith Mallard said he stopped in at the supermarket to use their ATM machine when he heard another security guard cry out, “Code blue, code blue.”

“The next thing I heard was, ‘boom, boom, boom' and we all ran to the back," Mallard said, still shaken from the ordeal.

An overnight shooting at a Central Fresno nightclub sent a security guard to the hospital.

It happened after midnight on Thursday at the Crossroads Nightclub at Cedar and Shields Avenues.

Someone fired shots from outside the club, hitting the guard, who was standing at the door of the club.

Police believe the shooter may have been friends with a man who was removed from the bar.

A security guard working an overnight shift at the Bank of America building in downtown Baltimore was shot and killed early Saturday when police said he tried to quell a dispute over a woman that erupted between a friend and several other men who had just left a nightclub.

Police identified the guard as James Ball, 38. He had worked for Wackenhut, a private security company hired by the building's owners. He died at Maryland Shock Trauma Center shortly after being shot twice, at least once in the chest, according to police.

MIAMI -- A security guard at the Earlington Heights Metrorail Garage was shot and killed Sunday night after being confronted by two men, police said.

According to investigators, 60-year-old Chevor Wint was working his shift as an armed security guard at the garage, located at 2100 NW 41st St., when two men approached him shortly after 10 p.m. A confrontation ensued, during which Wint was shot several times.

A security guard trying to help someone in danger was shot and killed. Suzanne Collins explains the officer was shot early Saturday morning while working at Bank of America headquarters.

The police say it started with a dispute over the treatment of a woman on the street. When the bank security officer was called in to help, shots rang out and he was struck.
