Any security company that hires staff to perform security services must employ the person as a W-2 employee, and they must have the class d security license. If someone is performing the following activities such as; access control, patrol, CCTV monitoring, loss prevention, and or fire watch, then they are performing security services. Moreover, if a person is providing security guard services directly for a client as their employee, such as working at a hotel, retail store, or as a bodyguard who receives a paycheck from that client, then they are not required to have a class d security license. This is called proprietary services, also known as in-house security. If a property management company is providing guard services to their clients, then the staff must be licensed with a class d security license and must be a licensed security agency with the State of Florida.

A person who was convicted out of state must go through the process of obtaining their civil rights. If an applicant cannot vote, then this means they do not have their civil rights restored. Once students complete the training course, they can then apply to the Division of Licensing for the Class D Security License in Florida. The state will provide applicants with a temporary permit to start working right away in the security industry. The state typically takes 30-90 days to process the Class D Security License in Florida. Once applicants are approved, the state will mail them the license. The security license is valid for two years and must be renewed to continue working. Security guards cannot work if the license is expired. If a person had a license in the past and it expired, then they will be required to re-apply for the license. They may have to retake the course after a certain amount of time if the state deems it necessary for the applicant.

What is the difference between Class D and Class E license?

Both the Class D license and the Class E licenses are regulated by the Division of Licensing for issuing the licenses and compliance. Both licenses require mandated training of 40 hours, and applicants must apply through the Division of Licensing. Any person who offers the services of a recovery agent must possess a Class E license, and any person who offers the services of a security guard must possess a Class D license. Both licenses are also required to work directly for a licensed agency. The Class E license worker is required to work for a Recover Agency (Class R Agency), and the Class D license worker is required to work for a Security Agency (Class B Agency).
